Cinematography Course Curriculum

 
 
This course is equivalent to cinematography courses in digital video format. The course begins with focussing on learning light, composition, aperture and lensing on regular film still camera as It is the best medium to understand the basics of camera in any cinematography course. Slowly the course moves to explore the technicalities of video camera and its advantage and limitation vis-à-vis a film camera. The course gives ample exercise to understand the demands of shooting fiction and documentary. The students are expected to have a good flair for understanding optical mathematics and sensitive towards moods of lighting, colour and textures. A cameraman to become good in the profession of cinematography also has to learn how to read a screenplay and interpret the director’s vision in image capturing terms. Besides that a cameraman always has to develop leadership qualities to deal with light boys, camera assistants, negotiating with equipment hirers. This video camera course provides excellent opportunities for the student explore these aspects practically to learn its nuances.

Semester II

 
This semester is aimed at imparting an overall introduction to Basics of Camera, Formats and Components; Basics of Lenses, Filters and Accessories; Concepts of Light and Optics. The basic constituents of Camera Composition and Framing; Camera Movements are extensively discussed. Experienced professionals from the industry are invited to hold workshops to transfer specialized technical skills in creative lighting, compositions and camera movements.

  • Detailed study of lens and the system, Block lenses and the zoom lens, subject focus and back focus
  • Basic camera operation, camera mount and tripod
  • Principle of composition and camera angle

Semester III (Common Module)

 
After the learning of two semesters, the third semester is again a time for students from all streams to collaborate together. This semester is dedicated for students to showcase their learning of the subject by making a diploma film. The film can be either a short fiction of not more than 10 minutes or a documentary of not more than 15 minutes. These films work as a portfolio for the students which they can showcase for their professional career ahead.
