A.F. Mathew is presently an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode. He has been teaching for the last two decades. Previous to his teaching career, he has worked on human rights’ issues with various organizations. He has done extensive fieldwork in the area of human rights violations and has published many fact-finding reports.He has also presented papers in various refereed national and international seminars. Some of these papers have been published in journals and edited books. He has delivered lectures and research papers at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Stockholm University, Sorbonne University, La Sabana University Bogota, Waseda University Tokyo, SAFHR Kathmandu, CUC Beijing and the Kathmandu School of Law. Prof. Mathew was also visiting Fellow at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
He has given lectures at IIM Calcutta, National Institute of Design (NID),Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication New Delhi, FTII-NFAI Pune, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) Calcutta, Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) and CEPT Ahmedabad. He has a PhD from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
Dr. Mathew specialty lies in using various teaching methodologies to teach cultural studies, globalization – its social, economic and cultural past, and cinema studies. It would be safe to state that there is no other teacher in India who uses the medium of Cinema to explore socio-economic, cultural and historical perspectives. And only can someone like Dr. AF Mathew infuse the curriculum with subjects that can help produce more socially aware, culturally sensitive and open-minded
