Media is a burgeoning force today that influences our world view profoundly. As future media professionals, it is very important to critically look at the current socio-political dynamics within the larger framework of humanity. Vimarsh is an initiative by SACAC to work as a platform where one can discuss the understanding of our society vis-à-vis the current trends. It is a forum held every month in the auditorium where we invite a renowned personality of from an area related to the topic to be discussed. This forum is open to all to participate.

'Cultural Context of Nurturing Girls in India'

The nurturing and education of girl children in India has been a problematic domain. The circumstances that weave the context for the upbringing of female children have not merely been economic. Contours of the cultural context do play a role in this process that need to be understood. During a session of Vimarsh in Sri Aurobindo Center of Arts and Communication on 30th October,09 Prof Krishna Kumar dealt some of the aspects of this issue with a different tool of meditative deliberation.

“Sex selection and Media”

The inaugural lecture of VIMARSH was held on 22nd January. The guest speaker was renowned development journalist Usha Rai . She spoke on 'SEX Selection and Media'. Alarm bells started ringing when the Census 2001 data was released. It revealed a drastic fall in the sex ratio, especially the child sex ratio. Whereas the overall sex ratio dropped from 934 to 920 per 1000 males. It is well known that socio-cultural factors and practices, such as the status of women, patriarchal structure of the society, preference for a son, fear of dowry and the belief that it is the son who can look after the old parents and so on are the main reasons for adverse sex ratio. In her lecture Usha Rai suggests – "The media can play a positive role in checking female foeticide and the falling female sex ratio.“

'Media and Social Change in India'

The distinguished guest of second lecture was a sociologist of national fame Prof. Anand Kumar. Prof Kumar spoke on 'Media and Social Change in India'. Prof. Kumar enunciated various theoretical models of inter-linkages between media and social change. He also analyzed various stages of growth of Media in India and put forward a sociological perspective of the role of Media in a developing society. It is note-worthy that Prof. Kumar developed and introduced a unique course in Jawaharlal Nehru University on 'Media, Democracy and Nation Building'.
