Asim Rafiqui

Artist, Writer, Visiting Faculty

Asim worked as an independent photojournalist from 2001 to 2017, producing stories for publications including National Geographic (France), GEO, Stern, Time Magazine, and others. He received an Open Society Fellowship in 2012 and a Fulbright Fellowship in 2011. Since 2009, Asim has primarily focused on self-funded and grant-funded independent projects in South Asia and Africa. In 2017, Asim and writer and lawyer Suchitra Vijayan co-founded The Polis Project – a humanities collective dedicated to publishing research and reportage that actively shape public discourse. Asim is currently pursuing a PhD at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. His research explores the indigenous knowledges and oceanic epistemologies of the mahigeer (fisherfolk) communities in Gwadar, in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. He has a MA in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London, an MBA from Columbia Business School, New York and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York.
