Paper & Form
Exploring Kashmiri Papier-Mâché & Paper Craft
Paper, often seen as a simple material, can transform into imaginative objects, sculptures, and decorative crafts through thoughtful techniques and creative exploration.
This workshop introduces participants to the traditional craft of paper mâché, with a special focus on the style inspired by Kashmiri paper mâché traditions. Participants will learn how recycled paper can be transformed into a malleable clay-like material and shaped into playful objects and decorative pieces.
Beginning with an introduction to the history and techniques of paper mâché, the workshop will guide students through the preparation of paper clay, followed by hands-on sessions in modelling small sculptures such as toys, keychains, and fridge magnets. Participants will experiment with shaping, detailing, and refining their creations while developing an understanding of form and structure.
While the paper mâché pieces dry, participants will also engage in creative paper-based crafts, such as making paper hangings and decorative objects, encouraging experimentation with different textures, forms, and designs.
The workshop concludes with finishing and coloring the dried paper mâché pieces, bringing each participant’s creations to life through vibrant colors and final touches.
This course offers a playful and environmentally conscious approach to art-making, encouraging creativity through the reuse and transformation of everyday materials.
